Chapter Nine

As his mouth descended and his arms enfolded her against him, Ella caught her breath at the heat and strength of him surrounding her. For a moment, she couldn’t think straight and stood frozen in his arms while his mouth brushed over hers once, then twice.

As she blinked in shock, her brain trying to catch up to what was going on, the amazing reality of it seeped in.

She was kissing Beck McKinley—and it was so much better than she ever could have imagined. Still not quite believing this was real, she returned the kiss with all the hunger she had been fighting down for so very long.

She forgot about the boys inside, about the snow spiraling down around them, the cold metal of her SUV seeping through the back of her wool coat.

The only thing she could focus on was Beck—his delicious mouth on hers, the strength of his muscles under her exploring hands, the heat and wonder and sheer thrill of kissing him at last.

She wasn’t sure how long he kissed her there in the cold December night—long enough, anyway, that when he pulled away, she felt disoriented, breathless, aware that her entire body pulsed with a low, delicious ache.

“I told myself I wasn’t going to do that.”

“I... Why?” His words jerked her out of that happy daze.

“Because I was afraid as soon as I kissed you once, I would only want to do it again and again. I was right.”

“I wouldn’t mind.” Some part of her warned her that she probably shouldn’t admit that, but the words spilled out before she could stop them.

He gazed down at her, his eyes flashing in the moonlight. He was so gorgeous, rough and masculine. How could any woman resist him?

“I like you, Ella. More than I should.”

A thrill shot through her at his words, even though it was tempered by the reluctant way he said them. He liked her, but was obviously not crazy about that fact.

“I like you, too,” she admitted. She didn’t add that the more time she spent with him, the more she liked him.

Something bright flashed in his gaze and he kissed her again, this time with a fierce intensity that completely took her breath away.

After another moment, he sighed and pulled away, his forehead pressed to hers. “I have to stop, while I still can.”

“You don’t have to.”

“It’s freezing out here. That snow is going to start in about ten minutes and the temperature will drop more. I have a feeling it might be pretty traumatic for my boys to find us here after the spring thaw, still locked together.”

With clear reluctance, he eased away. “That shouldn’t have happened, Ella. You get that, right? I can’t...start something with you.”

Maybe he should have thought of that little fact before he kissed her until she forgot her own name, she thought tartly. After the heated embrace they had just shared, something had already started between them, like it or not.

Oh, this was going to get awkward quickly.
